ADVANCED RF EXPOSURE REDUCTION SOLUTION FOR SMARTPHONES

Rakuvisions patented solution (US Pat. No. 10,034,297) ensures smartphones and other wireless communications devices comply to the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) limit of 1.6 W/kg in all usage scenarios including when held close to the users head, on the body or kept inside pockets. More About Rakuvisions

The founder of Rakuvisions was concerned that the use of communications devices such as smartphones & tablet devices could lead to increases in the radio frequency exposure to humans.

To address these concerns, Rakuvisions was formed in the US in 2016 while a revolutionary solution was invented to keep the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) exposure low.  This invention was granted US patent in 2018 while patents are pending in other countries.

Rakuvisions is ready to license this patent to smartphone manufacturers on a non-exclusive basis so that all could incorporate this solution into their devices. Widespread use of this invention would bring about a significant reduction in radio frequency exposure to humans.

The Solution

The RF module from the smartphone is separated out of the smartphone. This RF module which emits the radio frequency signal can now be placed strategically far away from the head while maintaining communications performance with the base station. Among other locations, the separated out RF module can be placed in or on the footwear, near the window when operating indoors and on a vehicle when travelling.

When used in conjunction with internet fiber connection inside buildings, the RF module can be replaced with a network interface module and therefore allow the smartphone to attach to the core network of the cellular provider via the internet.

When compared to the conventional smartphone transmitting at 200 milli-watts RF power, smartphone incorporating Rakuvisions solution transmits at less than 200 micro-watts; one thousandfold lower.

The RF power emitted from Rakuvisions powered smartphone can be reduced even further to as low as 40 micro-watts utilizing an Ultra-Wideband (UWB) low power technology and possibly even lower.

Under the Hood

Widespread use of this invention allows for the tremendous reduction of base station RF power while maintaining communications performance.

In addition to the reduction of RF exposure to humans, Rakuvisions Enhanced Receive Diversity™ significantly improves downlink communications performance when both the Smartphone and the Separated Out RF Module is allowed to receive and combine the RF signal from the base station.

The strategic placement of the Separated out RF Module allows for the tremendous improvement in the RF link to and from the base station leading to a number of benefits.

Rakuvisions patented solution introduces other benefits and features such as battery power via energy harvesting, child-friendly use, pluggable solution on conventional smartphones.

Here we illustrate an embodiment of this invention.

Note: Base station can refer to WWAN and/or WLAN

The Challenge

The FCC requires cell phone manufacturers to ensure that their phones comply with Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) limits for safe exposure. Any cell phone at or below 1.6 W/kg levels (that is, any phone legally sold in the US) is a "safe" phone, as measured by these standards.

Measurements and analysis of SAR in models of the human head have shown that FCC's 1.6 W/kg limit is unlikely to be exceeded under normal conditions of usage of cellular and PCS hand-held phones.

When a smartphone that is switched on while communicating with the cell tower is held closely to the head, kept inside a pocket or tucked inside a bra, the RF exposure may exceed the FCC SAR limit of 1.6 W/kg.

The Answers You Need

What evidence is there to show that the Radio Frequency exposure from cell phones may exceed FCC limits?

The City of Berkeley in California requires Cell phone retailers to provide to each customer who buys or leases a Cell phone the following notice:

To assure safety, the Federal Government requires that cell phones meet radio- frequency (RF) exposure guidelines. If you carry or use your phone in a pants or shirt pocket or tucked into a bra when the phone is ON and connected to a wireless network, you may exceed the federal guidelines for exposure to RF radiation. Refer to the instructions in your phone or user manual for information about how to use your phone safely.

This disclosure has been affirmed by the highest courts in the US.

Why is Rakuvisions licensing-out its patent instead of developing its own cell phone incorporating the RF exposure reduction solution?

By licensing-out our patent (US Pat. No. 10,034,297), we hope to enable as many cell phone manufacturers to incorporate our innovation for the benefit of as many consumers in the US and globally. We believe that our vision can be better achieved by not competing with the manufacturers while working closely with such device makers so that this important solution can be incorporated in the cell phones.

Why is there a need to ensure FCC's RF exposure limit is not exceeded in cell phones sold in the US?

Federal health and safety agencies support the use of the RF exposure limit as adopted by the FCC. In view of the consensus and the scientific support, FCC's SAR limits for the determination of safe exposure in not to be exceeded.

I've heard that the reduction of RF exposure solutions may degrade the performance of the cell phones. How is this different from the Rakuvisions solution?

Rakuvisions invention achieves the objective of reducing the RF exposure from cell phones by separating out the RF module from the device and using UWB low power link between the module and the device. The strategic placement of this separated out RF module in a location with a good RF link to the base station allows for maintaining communications performance. This invention is completely different from cell phone accessories that claim to shield the head from RF radiation.
